Types of Extensions

There are so many different types of extensions. In this section we give a brief overview of what they all are.

Clip In
Clip in Extensions – Where the hair is attached to wefts and comes in set pieces with clips attached. They simply clip into your hair. These come in either full head extension sets or small single streaks to add colour.

Weft/Weave
Weft / Weave Extensions – Where the hair is sewn onto a track, so that it can be sewn into the clients hair or onto a wig cap / base.

Hot Bonded
Hot Bonded Extensions – Where the hair is attached to the head in small sections using a bonding resin, which is heated and then formed into small bonds similar to a ‘grain of rice’ which secure the extension hair is place.

Flip in / On a Wire
Flip In or On a wire Extensions – Where a full heads worth of hair extensions is attached to a rounded wire that sits on the head. You flip your own hair over the top to hide the wire and you have a full head of extensions in about 30 seconds.

Synthetic Fibre
Synthetic / Monofibre Extensions – Where synthetic hair is braided in tiny sections to the hair. A drop of liquid hairspray is applied to the braid and more synthetic hair is then wound round the braid. A heat clamp is then used to melt the synthetic hair around the braid, creating a strong heat seal to hold the extension hair in place. To remove you twist the seal to snap it and slide the extension hair out of your hair.

Cold Bonded
Cold Bonded Extensions – Where the hair is usually applied in wefts. The wefts are cut to the correct length and a cold bonding resin is applied to the weft track, such as hair bonding glue or liquid gold. These will need to be removed with the correct remover solution.

Microrings
Micro ring Extensions – Where bulk loose or pre bonded hair is attached to the head in small sections by using a latch hook to thread the natural hair section and extension hair together through a small metal ring and clamping it with a set of small pliers.

Microloops
Micro Loop Extensions – Much like the above, as these are also Micro ring extensions, but these come with a plastic loop to thread the natural hair through already attached to the extension, which avoids the use of a latch hook and makes installation exceptionally quick and easy.

Nail Tip
Pre Bonded – Nail Tip U Tip – Where the hair already has bonding resin attached to the top of it in the shape of a nail or U. It has a slight curve and will melt with the use of a heat applicator tool and be able to be formed into a bond on the natural hair. The down side to these is that they are quite large, but they can be trimmed.

Stick Tip
Pre Bonded – Stick Tip I Tip – As above but the bonding resin is formed into a small stick, which makes them more ideally used with micro rings as opposed to heating and reforming.

Flat Tip
Pre Bonded – Flat Tip – As above but the bonding resin is formed into a flat tip, which will melt with the use of a heat applicator tool and be able to be formed into a bond on the natural hair. The down side to these is that they are quite large, but they can be trimmed.
