Hair Extensions - Clip In

Clip In Hair Extensions

Clip in hair extensions are sections of hair attached to wefts with special snap closure clips sewn on along the top. They come in various lengths and varying numbers of pieces.

You would choose the right clip ins for you by determining the thickness of your hair, how often you will be wearing them and whether you would like the clip ins for thickness, length or both.

If you are going for thickness then you would want 1-3 pieces on average. If going for length we'd recommend around 3-5. For thickness and length, go for 3-10 piece sets depending on how thick the wefts are (some will be double or even triple drawn, meaning the hair is sewn to the weft in many layers). Also, if your hair is very layered and choppy, it may be better for you to opt for a set of clip ins with more pieces, as they provide lots of different size weft pieces. This means you can clip in pieces as any where you need them, rather than following a set pattern.

Clip in Hair Extensions Application

As an example of how clip in extensions are installed, we have created the following step by step guide for you below. For the purpose of this guide, we have used Beauty Works 3 piece Remy clip in extensions in 18 inches length.

Step 1
Step 1 - Section your hair off approx 1-2" from the hairline.

Step 2
Step 2 - Slightly backcomb the hair at the root.

Step 3
Step 3 - Clip on a small extension strip by bending open the clips, sliding them into the backcombed root area and snapping shut. In our case, we are using the smallest weft in the Beauty Works set, which is 8" in width to fit neatly at the nape of the neck.

Step 4
Step 4 - Section of your hair around the head, above the ears and backcomb slightly.

Step 5
Step 5 - Clip in a larger extension strip, like before, snaping all clips shut. Ensure all are secure in the hair before doing do. In our case we are using one of the large pieces of the Beauty Works set, which is 11" wide and goes around the whole head.

Step 6
Step 6 - Repeat as before for the last extension piece, backcombing the roots of the hair slightly and placing the extension a little above the last. In our case we are using the last of the Beauty Works extension pieces, which again, is 11" in width. Leave a layer of your own hair onto to cover over the extensions.

Step 7
Step 7 - You're done! Brush gently to blend with your hair and styles as desired.

All done!

For an extra natural look, you can ask an experience extensions stylist to razor cut into the clip ins a bit to help blend them with your own hair better.

If you have more extension pieces in your set, they all clip in the same way as above. Position the pieces as suits your own hair.

Care and maintenance

Clip in extensions don't take much looking after. You can wash them gently with extension appropriate shampoos and condition the ends. Do not brush when wet. Comb from ends to roots bit by bit with a detangle comb and blow dry as normal or leave to air dry. Most clip in extensions can be styled as you would your own hair. Always check the packet for information about the particular product before using any styling tools on your extensions.
